Toric Contact Lenses for Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, has an irregular shape. The cornea is normally smooth and round, but in astigmatism, it develops an irregular second curve. The cornea focuses light onto the retina to create clear vision. When the cornea has two curves, it creates multiple focal points, causing blurred vision.

This irregular shape makes standard lenses less effective and requires specialized options such as toric or rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses.

What are Toric Contact Lenses?

Toric contact lenses correct astigmatism and are custom-made to fit the eye. Unlike standard lenses, toric lenses have an oblong design to match the astigmatic eye. Toric lenses can be made from soft or rigid gas permeable (RGP or GP) materials, but soft lenses are more common.

Toric lenses stay in place and maintain clear vision. As the eye moves or blinks, the lens can rotate on the eye. If this rotation continues with a soft toric lens, a rigid gas permeable lens might be more effective. Rigid gas permeable lenses require a longer adjustment period but often become as comfortable as soft lenses and are easier to maintain.

Toric lenses are available in daily and extended wear options. In some cases, colored toric lenses are available. Because of customization, toric lenses may cost more and take longer to produce.

If you have astigmatism, finding the right fit for your contact lenses is essential. Schedule an exam to determine which toric lenses are right for you.
